Emmanuel is an ecumenical congregation affiliated with the
American Baptist Churches of New Jersey
, the
American Baptist Churches USA
, and the
International Council of Community Churches
.
Established in 1891, the congregation has a strong and historic witness in social justice, preaching, and mission. Excellence in vocal and instrumental music has and continues to define Emmanuel.
Our facilities include a Gothic revival stone building built in 1911 which houses the sanctuary and its colorful and historic stained glass windows.
We have ample office, meeting, and educational space provided by two additions to the original building. Heritage Hall provides our primary space for large gatherings, and the Peace Lounge provides space for smaller informal events. Our facility is ADA fully accessible to those with special physical needs, there is a ramp to the sanctuary and an interior elevator making all floors of our facility fully accessible.
Our vision for ministry is inclusive.
Our congregation consists of persons of various religious backgrounds. We have several special needs adults and children who have a full place in Emmanuel's life. We value intergenerational cooperation, and we have formed partnerships among adults and children to aid cross-generational understanding. We provide large print bulletins and hearing devices. The worship service is accessible by telephone to the homebound.
The tone of our vision for ministry reflects our theology. Acceptance, openness, and caring are key ways we understand the gospel message.
Understanding different points of view is an important principal at Emmanuel. Many avenues for spiritual growth are provided, including Bible study, discussion of religious and social issues, retreats, and mission opportunities.
The fellowship within the congregation is warm, caring, and dynamic.
We have a weekly coffee hour following worship open to all that provides an opportunity for members and visitors to socialize and to get to know each other. An interesting mix of both active and retired individuals with varied vocations make up the congregation. Diversity is welcome and appreciated.
We are mission-minded.
The congregation recently entered into a partner church relationship with a Baptist church in Rwanda for mutual caring, support, and encouragement. We will be helping the Baptist Union of Rwanda to build a grinding mill to help improve the standard of living. We provide financial support for many mission agencies. We collect and distribute food and other items to those in need. We shelter the homeless one night a week for at least two months each year.
At Emmanuel there are many ways for you to grow spiritually and to be a part of a caring outreach to the community and to the world. No matter what your background, age, or interests, there is a place for you here at Emmanuel.
